Well-known Sweden actor Michael Nyqvist who appeared in film adaptation of Stieg Larsson's ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ dies when he was just 56.

Swedish actor passed away on Tuesday after a battle with lung cancer, media reports said.

“Michael’s joy and passion were infectious to those who knew and loved him,” his family said in a statement, adding, “His charm and charisma were undeniable, and his love for the arts was felt by all who had the pleasure of working with him.”

Born 1960 in Stockholm, the actor began his training at the Malmo Theatre Academy in Sweden.

He was best known for his role as Journalist Mikael Blomkvist in the Swedish adaptations of Stieg Larsson’s novels which included ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’, ‘The Girl Who Played with Fire’, and ‘The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest’.

Nyqvist also published a memoir in 2010, about his earliest memories as adopted child and how he later searched for his biological parents.

He is survived by his wife, Catharina Ehrnrooth, and their children, Ellen and Arthur.
